Statement:
Sri Prabha’s abstract mixed media art on wood and canvas are inspired by his love for nature and the cosmic forces of earth, wind, water, and fire that drive the natural world around us.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
My abstract mixed media paintings on canvas and wood are inspired by my love of nature in its many forms. From the blue green waters of Thailand, the deserts and jungles of India, the mountains in the Sierra Nevadas, the streams I kayak, and the thunderstorms that may pop up out nowhere. The cosmic forces behind these natural phenomena underlie these spaces and at a deeper level influence my paintings.
About the artwork:
Sri works with many materials including acrylic paint, cut paper, resin, gold leaf, coffee grounds, water color, gold leaf, and even leaves from hikes onto his paintings. He then applies many layers of materials on canvas or wood panels to produce a rich and luminous depth. Often, materials are scraped, sanded, or blow torched away until the work is finished. Sri likens this approach to what the forces of nature do to geography over time, such as wind and water eroding and creating rivers and mountains. He works on the canvases on a flat surface, instead of on an easel, working on a piece from many different angles, to create unusual compositions, which enable the viewer to experience the works at different vertical and horizontal orientations.
Collectors of Sri Prabha’s works have often remarked they find them evocative, soothing, meditative, yet dynamic and energetic. Sri believes the viewer will experience nature’s influences remapped into unique artworks.
Artist Biography:
Sri was born in Hyderabad, India and moved to the US when he was eight. He has lived in Boston, DC, Germany, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle. Sri received his Bachelor of Arts from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in 1995 in painting, video, and printmaking. In 2005, Sri received his MA in Clinical Psychology. Sri has worked in Motion Graphics and video art in San Francisco until 2006. He appears in the September 2006 issue of American Photo magazine as winner for the Ford Motion in Drive contest. He has also shared his technical and creative expertise by teaching at Film Arts Foundation and Expression Center for Digital Arts. Since 2006, Sri has returned exclusively to Painting and has been in various juried shows including the Toronto Art Expo, Marin Art Fair, and the Rockville Arts League. Sri is currently based near Washington DC and is working on paintings influenced by his recent trips to Vietnam, Thailand, India, Sweden, and Denmark.
